            the vader scene at the end is one of the most incredible moments in the whole franchise and the only time they ever understood and did something interesting with nostalgia

          the scene is beautifully paced, shot, lit, acted, scored, everything. the execution is flawless. you don't have to be a lifelong fan to appreciate that, it's just great filmmaking.

        but when I saw it in the cinema I experienced this complete emotional roller coaster. when I heard vader's breathing I got excited! it's iconic, he's one of my favorite characters, and I was going to get to see him again. nostalgic fan service right?

      then he proceeds to slowly slaughter the rebels like animals. the door is stuck. they have no chance. their faces are filled with terror you almost never see in Star Wars. he pins a guy to the ceiling and cuts him in half. it's not cool or anything, it's barbaric.

    my nostalgic excitement turned to horror. the movie set me up. that iconic character I love? the one I had action figures of and shit? yeah he's a psychopath and a war criminal. he always was. kind of his whole thing. and I sat with that. I've rewatched that scene a dozen times.

      idk if anyone else had that experience but I felt that rollercoaster was targeted at fans like me, a kind of anti-fan service to make us sit with the obscenity of being so excited about franchise with "war" in its title

        war isn't low stakes pew pew zap zap and cool catchphrases. war is an overwhelmingly powerful force slaughtering those who cannot fight back, and it's barbaric. one of the many reasons I love rogue one ✌🏼
