      it's especially devious because on the surface stuff like this sounds like a high level intellectual puzzle, but it's actually a total waste of time.

        idk who needs to hear this but: if you are struggling to wrap your head around object oriented "best practices" that you read online or in a book or learned at school, don't sweat it. it's not the be all and end all it's made out to be, and a lot of it is understood to be wrong.
