@farzanehbadii @nielstenoever @miltonmueller protocols that require ASCII encoding put up barriers to entry, particularly when that encoding becomes publicly facing like an email address or a url. barriers to entry are a political problem. whether the "protocol" is political or the "environment" is political is semantics.
