      @tiagoluchini our current system of government is arguably a direct holdover from Ottoman feudalism. seats in Parliament are allocated to different sects, and each sect has a handful of parties that represent them, most of which are headed by familial dynasties, some of which are 400 years old

    @tiagoluchini people are associated with these parties effectively by birth. there is nothing in the universe that one of the heads of these parties can do lose their position or face meaningful consequences. it's not about that, it's about identity, loyalty, association, tribalism.

      @tiagoluchini and that's what's happening with Trump I think. supporting him has become a part of people's identities in this country. it doesn't matter what he does he says, being a Trump supporter is becoming "who people are"
