            1. People digging into the specifics of RMS's contributions to lament his resignation are entirely missing the point. It doesn't fucking matter what he made. Achievements are not a currency you can exchange for leniency towards shitty behavior that makes people feel unsafe, period.

In addition to making contributions to software engineering and the free software movement, yes, sorry, you also have to be a decent human being who people feel safe around. That's not a "nice to have", that's a strict requirement. Contributions are not enough.

In a lot of ways, I think the community failed RMS over the years by not holding him accountable to his shitty behavior earlier. Maybe if we didn't just let his shit slide for so long, he could have learned earlier that making women uncomfortable was not okay, idk.

Instead what we got was a long laundry list of anecdotes over the years where he's done or said something gross or alienating. Instead what we got is a pattern and a breaking point. This is one way that toxic masculinity and male privilege fails men, for whatever that's worth.

Don't lament RMS. Lament the thousands of RMS's that we didn't get as a community because they bounced as soon as they encountered the behavior of shitty men like him and many many others. That's the real tragedy to here.

Anyway, good morning, I haven't had my coffee yet.
