@orta thats why i lean on platforms that get it right by default (e.g. the browser/canvas). integrating harfbuzz is not terribly difficult, either, i wrote about it here: increment.com/programming-languages/unplain-text-primer-on-non-latin/, but youre firmly in the realm of OpenType fonts.
