the dominant business model in tech is still "how do we show more targeted ads to more people" thats how google and facebook got as big as they did and everyone is looking for a similar angle. ive seen ad targetting shit in the games industry, the web industry, edtech, everywhere

for a long time ive had a crippling fear that some brain-computer product will appear and it will be free except sometimes you will have adverthoughts where think about products targeted to you, and you cant tell them apart from your own thoughts

and i dont think people will push back too much tbh. the same way we've normalized pervasive ad/surveillance tech, the same way we've normalized secret sponsored content, this would be normalized, and it fills me with dread. ugh.

scenario: the brain chip improves thinking while showing you ads. youre a parent who is opposed to it, but your kid is last in class because everyone else has one. wtf do you do? at what point do you give in? and how soon can you get a Cool Miller Lite™ - Cold As The Rockies©?
